Panel discussion | Who will power Africa’s mobile networks?

11 Sep 2025

Energy is the single most challenging and operationally complex aspect of telecom tower management in Africa. While towercos have proven to be an effective manager of tower infrastructure, the burden of rising costs, carbon reduction and efficiency demands are leading some MNOs to reconsider their energy partnerships. ESCOs have emerged as a credible alternative, and for some operators prompting a shift in strategy. This panel explores the ongoing growth of ESCOs in Africa, how mobile operators are viewing their strategic partnerships with ESCOs and towercos, and what space there is for deeper collaboration between these three key stakeholders.

  • What have been the key drivers of ESCO growth across Africa over the past 24 months?

  • Why are some MNOs rethinking the traditional towerco model, and where do ESCOs offer a compelling alternative?

  • How are ESCO business models evolving to meet specific carbon reduction and efficiency needs?

  • Are ESCOs becoming direct competitors to towercos, or are they complementary partners in the value chain?

  • What does the future of energy management look like in Africa, and what role will ESCOs play in the broader ecosystem?
